WellCare Foundation's Monte Carlo Night
By Myra Richman
On Saturday, October 10, 2009, WellCare Foundation held its Monte Carlo Night fundraiser at the Fiesta Resort Conference Center in Tempe with 180 in attendance.
A beautifully dressed crowd enjoyed an evening that began with a cocktail hour and silent auction, followed by dinner, a live auction, great raffle items and gambling.
WellCare mother Patty Smith brought her three-year-old son Luca, whom she adopted from the Marshall Islands (which incidentally has the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the world). "We never expect to be in a situation needing healthcare," said Smith, a former Peace Corps volunteer. WellCare was there for Luca, who had 'kissing tonsils,' and urgently needed corrective surgery.
There are more than 175,000 single, working mothers who cannot meet the healthcare needs of their families and fall through the cracks of our healthcare system. Thanks to the WellCare Foundation (founded by Marge Ebeling) and to the 131 generous clinicians who donate their time and expertise, they are able to help single, working mothers and their children get healthy and stay healthy by providing them the highest level of integrated, primary healthcare at no cost.
Imagine what it would be like to be a single, working mother who cannot afford to help her sick child or children--or unable to care for her children because of her own health issues.
WellCare is growing its health practitioner network, hoping to care for many more single mothers and their children in the near future.
