The Make-A-Wish Foundation Wish Ball 2010
By Myra Richman
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona celebrated the founding of the organization in Phoenix -- the city where it begain -- at the 2010 Wish Ball on Saturday, April 24, 2010.
This year's theme was "Celebrating 30 Years of Wishes." The black-tie gala was held at the Sheraton Downtown Phoenix Hotel.
Several founders of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, corporate partners including the Disney® Company, wish kids and celebrity guests attended the annual event, and walked into a beautifully decorated happy ballroom with colorful balloons in clusters on the ceiling.
Festivities include live and silent auctions, cocktails, a gourmet dinner, live entertainment and a video presentation about the history of the foundation. Good Morning Arizona anchors Scott Passmore and Kaley O’Kelley the masters of ceremonies.
The chair and co-chair of the 2010 Wish Ball were Renee Roebuck and Andrea Stewart. Frank and Kitty Shankwitz were the honorary co-chairs of the event.
Frank and Kitty Shankwitz, founders of the foundation, were recognized at the gala for their remarkable work, their passion for children and their ongoing support.
After participating in granting the wish of Chris Greicius, a seven-year-old boy with leukemia, Frank had the idea to create a nonprofit organization that would grant the wishes for other children with life-threatening illnesses and the Make-A-Wish Foundation was born.
Beautiful wish child, Samantha, was surprised with a call from Minnie Mouse, inviting her to Disney World, along with her family.
Cancer survivor, Kevin Sharp, an award winning vocalist and entertainer, brought tears to the audience with his new song called "Make A Wish." His fulfilled wish of once meeting the legendary musician David Foster changed his life forever...and he never forgot the organization that made it happen.
The goal of this year's Wish Ball was to raise $700,000 to fund more than 100 wishes for children. All proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
